Museums in Presov

Wine museum
Spaces under the Town Hall hide untraditional museum. Its exposition will lead you deep under ground. History of making wine, authentic artefacts and wines from all over the world – most of them available for tasting and buying – takes place on several floors down, in the tipical Prešov´s cellars. Museum also holds prestigeous competition MUVINA. Each year in the summer more of the finest wine from all over the world come to Prešov and try to win the quality price.
Museum is opened from Monday to Saturday. Bone – guy is not missing either.

Solivary Presov
Salt mining is inseparable part of Prešov´s history. However today´s technology cannot be compared to the one from the 17. century, salt production still exists in Prešov and even the old complex of 12 techological objects where salt was puped and boiled can be seen. All together they belong to the National cultural heritage. The oldest building is the object surrounding the pit Leopold from the year 1571. All mechanizm, moved by the horse power, was preserved. Together with other parts of the complex it creates unique monument which doesn´t have any „rival“ in Slovakia. It is situated in the town part Solivar and belongs to Slovak technical museum. It´s possible to order special guide from Tuesday do Saturday.

While men were in mines, women made typical Soľná baňa bobbin lace at home. There are only few women left who can still create these unique colored bobbin lace of more than 400 years tradition.

Presov regional museum
Regional museum collects all the information about this part of the country. It has permanent exhibitions: Man and fire (about firemen), History of Prešov, Historical weapons, Historical clock, In the farmer´s yard. Museum also regularly holds short – termed expositions from various fields, including art. In Župčany, app. 5 km in Poprad direction, is one permanent external exposition: Literary traditions of eastern Slovakia. It takes place in the house of famous rebel and playwright Jonáš Záborský (Prešov´s theatre is named after him). Main seat of the Regional museum is on the Hlavná street in Rákocszi´s palace. It is opened from Tuesday till Friday and on Sunday.

Museum of Jewish culture
On the very first look inconspicious synagogue hides inside a treasure of this type of architecture. Beautifuly decorated interiers with original oriental paintings make Prešov´s synagogue one of the most attractive in Slovakia. Inside you can find also Museum of Jewish culture. The most valuable is so – called Barkány collection, placed in the women´s gallery (the first floor). Museum can be found in the historical centre at Okružná street, it´s opened from Tuesday to Thursday and on Sunday.

Šariš gallery
This gallery is one of the oldest regional galleries in Slovakia. It concentrates on Prešov´s and northern – eastern artists. It is situated at Hlavná street in the renaissance house with interesting tympanon where is placed statue of the soldier with sword in one hand and head of the enemy in the other hand. Gallery is opend from Tuesday till Friday and on Sunday.

Beer gallery
The only beer gallery in Slovakia can be found in the centre of the town, at Svätoplukova street, in the non – smokers pub. It is the creation of caricaturist Fedor Vico who organize big international competition of drawn humor about the beer every year, Golden Barrel. Prešov region, historicaly known as Šariš, is famous also for its original beer which is traditionaly boiled here for ages.
